How to Use This Book

מתחילים מהשאלה הכי בסיסית — what is a wave?

Important ·

In English This booklet teaches synthesis as a chain of physical decisions that shape a wave into a sound. You start from "what is a wave" and progress, step by step, to reverse-engineering existing sounds and recreating famous artists' tones. Every concept is explained first in principle, then demonstrated hands-on in Serum 2 and Vital side by side. But the software is only the demonstration vehicle — the knowledge is universal and applies equally to Omnisphere, Massive, a modular analog rig, or any synth ever made. Hebrew is the primary language; English terms and summaries appear throughout so the vocabulary transfers everywhere.

A synthesizer is not knobs. It is a chain of physical decisions, each one shaping the wave — and at the end, a sound is born. Once you understand the chain, you can build any sound you can imagine, and take apart any sound that already exists.

This booklet is a graded journey. It starts from the most basic question — what is a wave? — and moves step by step until you are reverse-engineering the sounds of other artists. Every concept is explained first in principle (the physics and the perception), then in practice inside Serum 2 and Vital, side by side.

Part 1 — Foundations

What sound is, waveforms, harmonics, and the anatomy of a synthesizer.

Part 2 — The Engine

Oscillators, wavetables, filters, envelopes, LFOs and modulation.

Part 3 — The Craft

Advanced engines, effects, sound recipes and imitating any sound.

How to read the demos

Every demo box is marked DEMO and holds two columns: Serum 2 (paid) and Vital (free). Parameter names look like this: Warp, Cutoff. English terms are highlighted as wavetable position. Beyond Part 3, the book expands into the analog world, a full effects library, flagship-synth capabilities, whole chapters per sound category, and an artist cookbook.

The software is only a demonstration vehicle — the knowledge is universal

We demonstrate on Serum 2 and Vital because they are accessible, modern and visual — but this book is not about those tools. It is about synthesis itself. Every principle works identically in Omnisphere, in Massive, in a modular analog rig, or in any other instrument. When you finish, you will open any synth and feel at home. The software is the pen; synthesis is the language.

The Foundations — from a single wave to the anatomy of a synth
Chapter One

What Is Sound? The Physics of a Wave

Frequency

Amplitude

Timbre

Amplitude One cycle Frequency = cycles per second (Hz) ↑ Pressure Time →
Sine wave — the anatomy of a single cycle
Key idea

The Hearing Range

In English Sound is air-pressure variation traveling to your ear. Every periodic wave has three properties: frequency (how often it repeats — perceived as pitch, measured in Hz), amplitude (its height — perceived as loudness), and waveform / timbre (its shape — perceived as tone color). A synthesizer generates and sculpts these electrically. Humans hear roughly 20 Hz–20 kHz. Master these three properties and you understand every synth ever made.

Before touching a single knob, you need to understand what we are actually shaping. Sound is variations in air pressure traveling through the air to your ear. A synthesizer creates those pressure variations from scratch — electrically.

When a guitar string vibrates, it pushes and pulls the air around it, creating a pressure wave. That wave is a sequence of compressions (high pressure) and rarefactions (low pressure). If you plot the pressure over time, you get a curve — this is the waveform. Everything a synthesizer does is generate and shape that curve.

The three properties of every wave

Every periodic (repeating) wave has three properties from which everything else follows:

1 · Frequency

How many times the wave repeats per second, measured in Hz. Higher frequency = higher pitch. 440 Hz = the note A.

2 · Amplitude

The height of the wave — how strong the pressure is. Higher amplitude = louder sound.

3 · Waveform (Timbre)

The "character" of the sound — why a trumpet and a piano on the same note sound different. This is the heart of synthesis.

Amplitude One cycle Frequency = cycles per second (Hz)
Sine wave — the anatomy of a single cycle: amplitude (height) and frequency (repetition speed)

The rule that drives this entire book

Frequency sets the pitch, amplitude sets the loudness, and waveform sets the color. Synthesis = controlling all three over time.

The hearing range

The human ear hears roughly between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). Below that you feel vibration (sub-bass); above it is beyond hearing. Every musical sound you design sits in this range — and dividing it into bands (bass, mid, treble) is the basis of frequency balancing later on.

Chapter Two

The Basic Waveforms

Sine Sine Triangle Triangle Sawtooth Saw Square Square The four classic waveforms

Why it matters

Serum 2
Wavetable.
Basic Shapes.
Vital חינם
Init / Basic Shapes.
In English Four classic shapes are the building blocks: sine (pure, one harmonic), triangle (soft, weak odd harmonics), sawtooth (rich, all harmonics), and square/pulse (hollow, odd harmonics only), plus noise (all frequencies, no pitch). A saw is "raw material" you can filter down; a sine has nothing to filter. That's why most bass and lead design begins with a sawtooth.

Four waveforms are the "classic building blocks" of synthesis. Each sounds different because each contains a different harmonic makeup — a topic we open fully in the next chapter.

Sine Triangle Sawtooth Square The four classic waveforms
From smooth to bright: each shape carries a different set of harmonics
WaveformCharacterHarmonic contentTypical use
SinePure, round, "whistling"Single harmonic only (the fundamental)Sub-bass, whistles, clean layers
TriangleSoft, hollow, gentleWeak odd harmonicsSoft basses, gentle leads, flutes
SawtoothRich, sharp, "full"All harmonicsLeads, basses, pads, strings
Square / PulseHollow, "clicky", squareOdd harmonics onlySquare bass, retro leads, chip-tune
NoiseBreath / hissAll frequencies at random (no pitch)Percussion, wind, FX, breath

Saw = "everything", Sine = "nothing"

A sawtooth contains all the harmonics, so it is "rich raw material" you can carve with a filter. A sine is completely pure and there is nothing to carve — so you use it when you want purity, or as a basis for FM. That's why most bass and lead design begins with a saw.

DEMO · Your first waveform

Pick a sawtooth and hear the difference against a sine:

Serum 2 paid
  1. Open OSC A — by default it is in Wavetable mode.
  2. Click the table name at the top and choose Basic Shapes.
  3. Drag WT Pos — you'll hear it morph sine → triangle → saw → square within one table.
  4. Compare: a sine has nothing to "open" in the filter; a saw has plenty.
Vital free
  1. In OSC 1 click the wavetable window and choose Init / Basic Shapes.
  2. Move the Wavetable Position and watch the wave change in real time.
  3. Set Transpose to -24 to hear a clean sub (sine).
  4. Switch back to a saw — notice the harmonic richness.
By-ear checkpoint

Recognize the four waveforms by sound

Play a saw, a square, a triangle and a sine and burn each into memory: saw is bright and buzzy, square is hollow and reedy, triangle is soft with a little edge, sine is pure. Being able to name a waveform with your eyes shut is rung one of the recognition ladder in Part Thirteen · The Syntorial Method — the foundation every later sound is built on.

Chapter Three

Harmonics & the Spectrum

dB Frequency → 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 fundamental Harmonic spectrum of a sawtooth (amplitude ∝ 1/n)
The same saw, seen as a spectrum: a tall fundamental plus decaying harmonics

The master key

In English Fourier's insight: every complex tone is a sum of simple sine waves — a fundamental plus harmonics at integer multiples. Their balance defines timbre. You can view a sound in the time domain (the waveform) or the frequency domain (the spectrum). Wavetables and spectral engines let you draw harmonics directly; filters remove them. Because every sound is a harmonic fingerprint, imitating a sound means reconstructing its harmonic profile over time — the core method of Chapter 14.

This is the single idea that, if you truly understand it, unlocks all of synthesis. Every complex sound is a sum of simple sine waves. This is Fourier's theorem, and it is the basis of wavetables, filters, and sound imitation.

Take a sawtooth. It sounds like "one thing," but mathematically it is a stack of sine waves: the fundamental frequency (fundamental), and above it a series of sines at multiple frequencies — ×2, ×3, ×4 and so on. These are the harmonics (overtones). The ratio between them defines the color of the sound.

fundamental Harmonic spectrum of a sawtooth (amplitude ∝ 1/n)
The same saw, seen as a spectrum: a tall fundamental plus decaying harmonics

Two views of the same sound

There are two ways to "see" a sound, and both appear in every modern synth:

  • Time domain — the waveform changing over time. This is what you see in the oscilloscope / wavetable window.
  • Frequency domain — how much energy sits at each frequency. This is what you see in a spectrum analyzer / EQ.

The wavetable and the spectral engine (in Serum 2) work directly in the frequency domain — which is why you can "draw" harmonics. A filter, by contrast, simply weakens certain harmonics. Two sides of the same coin.

Why this is the master key to imitating any sound

If every sound is a sum of harmonics, then imitating a sound means recreating its harmonic profile and how it changes over time. A piano, a human voice, a jet engine — all of them are a harmonic "fingerprint." In Chapter 14 we use exactly this idea to take apart and rebuild existing sounds.

Chapter Four

The Anatomy of a Synthesizer

OSC Oscillator FILTER Filter AMP Amplifier FX FX → Output ENV / ADSR LFO MOD MATRIX Source → Shape → Level → Polish Dashed line = modulation: sources controlling parameters over time
The universal signal path — every synth follows itשרשרת האות האוניברסלית — כל סינתיסייזר בנוי כך

Oscillator

Filter

Amplifier / VCA

Mental model

In English Every synth follows one universal signal path: Oscillator → Filter → Amplifier → FX (source → shape → level → polish). On top of that sits modulation — envelopes and LFOs that move parameters over time, turning a static tone into a living sound. Learn to spot these five elements and any new synth, including Serum 2 and Vital, instantly becomes familiar.

Every synthesizer in the world — hardware or software, old or new — is built from the same signal chain. Once you know the chain, every new tool looks familiar.

OSC FILTER AMP FX → out Source → Shape → Level → Polish Dashed lines = modulation: sources that control parameters over time
The universal signal path — every synth follows it

The four stations of the signal

① Oscillator

The sound source. It generates the raw wave (saw, wavetable, sample…). Here the "raw material" is set.

② Filter

Sculpts the wave — removes or emphasizes frequencies. Here most of the "feel" and movement is set.

③ Amplifier (VCA)

Controls loudness over time — shaped by an envelope. Here you decide whether the sound snaps in sharply or rises softly.

④ Effects (FX)

Reverb, delay, distortion, etc. — the final polish that turns a "dry" sound into a spacious, impressive one.

The fifth dimension: modulation

So far we've described a static sound. What makes a synth alive is modulation: sources like envelopes and LFOs that control parameters over time. A filter opening gradually, a vibrating volume, a moving wavetable — all of these are modulation. It is the subject of Chapters 8–10, and the secret to turning a "flat" sound into a living one.

The mantra: Source ← Shape ← Level ← Polish

Whenever you open a new tool, look for the four stations and the modulation sources. They are always there. Serum 2 and Vital are both built exactly this way — only the graphics differ.
